mason cummings

Mason’s photographic endeavors began when he first got his hands on an SLR camera at the age of 16. Since then, photography has become a central element of his life.

Before graduating from Colorado State University in December of 2007, Mason was looking for a way to bridge the gap between his two majors: anthropology and journalism. The visual medium of photography, he thought, was perhaps the best way to effectively convey abstract general concepts to a broad audience. Through much of his work, he strives to apply his anthropological perspective in the effort to document social issues and processes. In this approach, Mason seeks to truly capture the personalities of his subjects and their cultural backgrounds. Still much of his other work reaches no deeper than a purely aesthetic realm, which stems back to his love of photography as an art in itself. His enthusiasm for nature and the outdoors has also allowed him to indulge extensively in landscape photography. Finally, Mason is a frequent patron of live music events, and he has recently begun to undertake various projects in concert photography.

A well-rounded photographer and photojournalist, Mason is capable of covering a diverse range of projects. He is currently available for assignment or hire in Charleston and surrounding areas. Those interested in booking a shoot should email Mason for rates and availability.

Mason's Approach

In Mason’s unique approach to photography, the image is only half-complete upon initial capture. Contemporary opportunities for further manipulation and enhancement, he feels, are just too good to pass up. In this approach, Mason will thoroughly edit each individual image in the effort to make it look its absolute best. Unlike other photographers (who commonly use batch-editing software), Mason’s images are enhanced on an individual basis to bring out every essential detail of each photograph. Each image is different in its own right, and therefore they should be treated accordingly. Please feel free to browse through Mason’s extended galleries for further examples of his detail-oriented approach to photography, and don’t hesitate to email or call with any further questions.
