Mason’s photographic endeavors began when he first got his hands on an SLR camera at the age of 16. Since then, photography has become a central element of his life.
As an undergraduate studying anthropology and journalism at Colorado State University, Mason felt that the visual medium of photography was perhaps the best way to effectively convey abstract general concepts to a broad audience. Much of his portfolio is characterized by an emphasis on maintaining a highly ecological aesthetic, which strives to illustrate the unadulterated beauty of pristine nature, and sometimes contains juxtapositions between elements of modern society and a natural scene. He brings his academic background to portraiture work as well, through a distinctive anthropological approach that seeks to truly capture the personalities of his subjects and their cultural backgrounds. Still much of his other work reaches no deeper than art for the sake of basic visual appeal, which stems back to his love of photography and strong appreciation for all other forms of visual art. Finally, Mason is a frequent patron of live music events, and he has recently begun to undertake various projects in concert photography.
In Mason’s unique approach to photography, each image is only half-complete upon initial capture. Every shot is individually detailed and enhanced in the effort to make the subject come to life. Most landscape and scenery shots within his galleries are HDR (High Dynamic Range) photographs, a labor intensive technique that (with a proper approach) can give any particular scene a “more than real” quality.
A well-rounded photographer and photojournalist, Mason is capable of covering a diverse range of projects. He is currently available for assignment or hire in Charleston and surrounding areas.
